ATP - week of 8/29 WHATS YOUR GOAL

Hey Everybody- "If you would hit the mark, you need aim a little above it." Henry Longfellow

'Achievement is the greatest motivator. Like a wonderful perpertual motion device, achievement continually powers you to dare more, go higher, gain further sucess.

But many of us have excuses for not achieving. We call ourselves late bloomers, slow learners...

If you want a healthy, leaner body and a release from a horrible dependency on food, you must make the required investment. Once you invest in yourself, its not all uphill anymore; just getting into action smoothes the road ahead.

Decide that achievement is worth investing in today. You'll find that you can hit the mark if you give up cherished excuses from te past. Today, you are an achiever.

I will fly as high as I want to. I will achieve one goal that I have been postponing.'

This was taken from a Daily Meditation book for fat-free, built free, inge-free living. Jeane Eddy Westin

My goal is to take quit beating myself up and to one day at a time eat clean and get work outs in. I also want to schedule in some 'me time'

Sorry for late start - computer acting up this morning.

Lets go make it a great week!!

Bettie

I think most everyone on this team has achieved the above - you have adopted the "Food is Fuel' mind set - thats going to be my mantra this week :-)

Hey Bettie-Thank for starting us off. I really enjoyed reading your post.

My goal for today it to eat clean, drink my water and do two things I have been putting off. I was sick over the weekend so I'm giving myself another day to recover before working out again.

Have a great day everyone!

Good morning, ATP!

Thanks for a good start, Bettie!  I appreciate the reminder about goals.....It is sometimes too easy to set goals and then forget about them.

My goal for today is rather modest.  I still have 12 stitches in my left arm, take 'em out next week, so my movements are rather limeted.  I intend to work abs and do 45 minutes of cardio at some point today.

Have fun everybody!       Cool

okay - you've all heard this before - I find it difficult to eat clean around hubby. Yesterday we went to the movies, he got popcorn and candy - I ended up indulging - thought process is 'this is too much - I want it too!'. Then I"m mad at myself. Was going to bring a Myoplex Lite bar which I know is not that great either - but damn it - I wanted the popcorn. So need to come up with some kind of way to get around this. Plan on being married a long time so need to come up with a way to cope (another goal?). I find I do okay if I'm really mentally having a great day - but if I don't feel well - there it goes! Want to listen to my body as Larry suggested. I think I"m worn out. Can you tell I"m off today? lots of posting. Thanks for 'listening' teamies!!I'm seeing a bit of sunshine...

Good Monday teamies!

Thanks for the great start Bettie--and glad to see you are taking it one day at a time----I hope you get some "me time" today     Dang that hubby!  I do not let mine tempt me when I am committed to a challenge or competition---but lately--without that commitment---it is so easy to just imbibe in a bit of the junk he is having--because I can.  That is why I am starting a challenge and I need to get my starts out or just put ck marks or something on my calendar.  I don't know about you --but once I get started and get on a roll I do better too.

Hey Jules---Sorry you were under weather.  Have to let you know that I did it--I registered for swim lessons--I will not be in the very beginner class--cause I am not afraid to at least get in the water and put my head in and I do know a few strokes---but I do them wrong I think-and can't do the breathing thing...so I am in the 2nd class that comes after the one where you just get over fear of water mostly I guess.  Should I get goggles?  and what about the bathing cap?

Hi Larry--stitches?  Did you have more work done for skin cancers?  Good plan doing abs and cardio.

Me, I walked for 30 minutes and that made my leg and back hurt--even on the treadmill--did some ab work and push ups and that felt good.  My gym / rec center is closed this week for annual cleaning.  I need the break from lifting but miss being able to get in the water--that is what seems to make my back and leg feel best.  Oh, and running the sweeper--that made my back hurt the most---maybe I should give it up--LOL.  Anyway, back to chiropractor this afternoon--I am scheduled to get in to see him 3 times this week.  This is really getting old and I wish I would just wake up and everything would be all better.

Morning all. Bettie, thanks for the great start. I need a bit of a reminder why I do this today. Been on "vacation" from nutrition and exercise for a week and I am now hearing the voices beckoning me back.

Below is part of an article from the Los Angeles Times Health section. It's a discussion of nutrition/exercise versus cosmetic surgery...DAH. I especially found the part about the benefits of nutrition/exercise on "elderly" folks.....

So let us consider … making the diet-and-exercise choice.

Unless you're rebuilding your body with cosmetic surgery on a McDonald's drive-through attendant salary, diet and exercise is the tougher option, but it also comes with significantly more benefits. That's the way life works most times; the more effort you put into it, the more you receive back, which is why I think that if you can achieve a visual goal with exercise instead of surgery, then you should.

Now before half of Beverly Hills reaches for their torches and pitchforks, let me explain some of the practical implications of diet and exercise versus cosmetic surgery:

• A rippling abdomen carved via diet and exercise is going to look better than one obtained via surgery. Same goes for a weightlifting / Pilates / boot camp sculpted behind.

• As already mentioned, diet and exercise will most likely cost less.

• Pectoral implants will not help you open ketchup bottles or pickle jars.

But it doesn't end there. There is some science too.

Invasive cosmetic procedures have risks associated with them, whereas the health benefits of eating a balanced diet and exercising are undeniable (unless you happen to be out for a run and some cellphone-yapping moron creams you with his hybrid Humvee).

• A 2008 study by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, assessed 970 men who lived to a minimum of 90 years of age. The conclusions: "Modifiable healthy behaviors during early elderly years, including smoking abstinence, weight management, blood pressure control, and regular exercise, are associated not only with enhanced life span in men but also with good health and function during older age."

• A 2008 study by researchers at the University of Cambridge, published in PLoS Medicine, found that middle-aged and older people who didn't smoke, who had a high fruit and vegetable intake and a moderate to low alcohol intake, and who exercised regularly had the equivalent of a chronological age that was 14 years younger than people who possessed none of these characteristics.

• A 2007 e-book, "The Role of Physical Exercise in Preventing Disease and Improving the Quality of Life," by researcher David Hood of York University in Canada, made the case that leading a healthy lifestyle dramatically decreases the likelihood of contracting myriad diseases and, as a result, extends life expectancy.

• A 2008 study of centenarians by researchers at Boston University, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that the majority had what is referred to as "compressed disability" or "compressed morbidity." What this means is that the long-lived remain highly functional and without debilitating diseases until they are close to death.

It's nice to know that you can live to an exceptional age and not be an invalid.

Feeling better

Now let's look at the psychology of all this.

Many studies have found that regular exercise is good for treating depression and improving your overall mental well-being, but what I'd like to examine is how it affects your self-confidence. The self-efficacy theory, developed by renowned Stanford University professor Albert Bandura, holds that we become stronger — better, in a way — through persistence and overcoming obstacles.

Say you're in poor physical shape and make a determined effort to change your eating habits and adopt regular exercise. And say your efforts are successful. You've achieved a degree of mastery that boosts self-confidence. This success raises your expectations, and you then try to achieve more ambitious goals.

Ultimately, the sky's the limit

Using diet and exercise to get in shape takes planning, patience and persistence. Being successful at it helps you become a problem solver and righteous goal achiever, spurring you to successes in other aspects of your life.

The diet-and-exercise approach changes you from the inside out — for the better. This is something that no surgeon, no matter how fancy the degrees hanging on the wall or how hefty the bill, can accomplish.

That isn't to say that lifestyle and cosmetic surgery offer a cut-and-dried either/or choice. Many people live healthy and active lifestyles yet still get some strategic nipping, tucking and sandblasting to improve their appearance, and that's all cool.

But if you've got the opportunity to achieve your goals in a non-surgical manner, then consider doing it. Your body (and inner self) will thank you.

Come up with something that can't be done, then figure out how to do it.

Sal-Congrats on the swimming. YES!!! get goggles and a swim cap. Make sure you buy a swim cap that is easy to pull on and off. The cheapie latex caps hurt like hell and pull your hair. Also, make sure you have a good lotion and a good conditioner for your hair. The clorine can cause your skin and your hair to dry out.

Jules - hope you're feeling better. Glad you are taking care of yourself.

Jeff - I agree with Julia - awesome article. Man, it hit home for me. I Originally got into BFL cuz I felt horrible about myself - had gained weight, etc. But I also hoped that if I lost weight and gained the confidence that goes with it - I'd get out of my current job. That was going on 3 years ago. I lost weight but something has held me back from really going for 'it'. It being - getting in the top physical shape I"d like to get in. I"ve settled and made excuses. And made my job more important than my body. There - I said it. Also, I"m prone to depression - another great reason to WORK OUT! I"m going for it - I needed to read that. Thanks.

Sal - Yes, I"m pulling the stars out again. I"m embarressed to say I am on my last week - I was doing the 12 week Labrada challenge in honor of Mike Harris. But i"ll give myself a break because the truth is even though I havn't done 95 or 100% - I have hung in. I'm dusting myself off (did not eat clean today - DH came home and asked if I wanted ice cream - I realize I"m using him as a crutch and need to ditch the attitude). Will finish this last week - I intend to eat clean every day and get work outs in! So - head back up. Thats so great about you swimming Sal - you have come up with a great solution. I still have difficulty vacuuming BTW, DH does it - I bought a little hand held one for small clean ups.

Larry - I loved reading your diary thread. You are doing such a super job. I am proud of you and its very motivating.

G'night all! Oh - I had a super 'me' day. Really needed to vege out. Tomorrow I"m back at it. Bettie
